You’ve Got a Friend
I remember a song from my childhood that went something like this... “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world.” Then I believe it was Carly Simon who asked us all... “Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend?”
We all need friends. We all need those who will walk alongside us in our tough times, the tough times of our own making and the ones that are hurled at us by circumstance.
Sometimes those people are nestled within our own families. Other times they are beautiful surprises that God brings to us just when we need them
People who will HEAR us. People who will PRAY for us. People who will take our hand and LEAD us through the fires of life and bring us out of the flames with our hearts unscorched.
Ruth was that kind of friend to her mother-in-law Naomi. How bitter Naomi was. How hopeless after losing not only her husband, but her two sons, while living in a foreign land. How desperate she must have been to be willing to take off alone to travel to her homeland.
But she didn’t realize what a treasure God had brought her in her sweet, brave daughter-in-law. A woman, a widow herself, who willingly left all she knew to walk through that journey with Naomi.
And once they reached their destination, she gave all she had to make sure Naomi had all she needed. The true sacrifice of friendship. The literal carrying of burdens. All done with honor, respect, love, and devotion to making someone else’s life better.
What a blessing it is when God brings us a Ruth to walk alongside us! How much sweeter this journey of life is with sweet sisterhood!
We all have such wonderful opportunities to walk alongside others, to carry a bit of their load, to bring a smile to a burdened heart, and to make a difference in someone’s life. Whose life can you touch today? Who can you pray for...walk with? Whose burdens can your help carry to lighten a load?
God will use you...if your heart is willing.
