Expert Builders

1 CORINTHIANS 3:5-23

(August 7)

I live in a new neighborhood. When I moved in last year, the first phase of the housing community was complete. The homes stood like shiny new beacons on the manicured lawns.

Just down a small slope was a massive space of dirt. The roads had already been carved out and paved with asphalt. Slowly over this past year I have watched over 90 homes rise up from that barren lot.

It has been interesting to watch the process. So many different workers participate in the construction of a home. You have the concrete pourers, framers, plumbers, electricians, roofers, those who do the dry wall or lay the stone on the outside, those who install cabinets and appliances, and those who take care of the landscaping. Like I said ... it is a process!

The first and most important step is the foundation. If that isn't solid, nothing else is going to go well. Can you say "Timberrrrrrr?"

The foundations on these homes are solid and thick. Believe me ... they aren't going anywhere! They have been built, each specific part of the process, by experts in that particular field.

Paul is telling us in today's reading that he feels like he has laid a solid foundation, just like an expert builder. He gives no credit to himself for this success. All glory goes to God because everything belongs to God.

And while he may have been the expert foundation layer, there will be others participating in the in the building of this particular "house". Being an expert at what he does, he wants to make sure that those who add to his structure are wise in the ways of God and build it up correctly. Everyone will be judged by their own part in the process. It doesn't matter what materials are used. It only matters how successfully the builder uses his Godly wisdom.

Friends, we are the temple of God. He is our strong foundation. Anyone we allow to lead us has an effect on us. So, we must be careful to find those who will lead us with the wisdom of God, not for boastful and prideful purposes. The wise in the things of God know that it is not about them, it is all about God.

When we seek God wholeheartedly and seek wise counsel in our journey to spiritual maturity, we become the expert builders that God prepares us to be.
